Despite all the restrictions, cultural life got off to a somewhat better start in 2021. The Maggini Foundation has redefined its customer base. In the future, it will only offer fine string instruments in Switzerland, in our neighbouring countries and in England. In this area, musicians can continue to take advantage of the high-quality offerings of our foundation as before. We wish everyone happy holidays! (22 December 2021)
Swiss Radio and Television visited the Maggini Foundation and talked to us about string instruments as an investment. Click here to watch the report. (14 June 2021)
Here is another reference to a beautiful video project: Francesco Negrini, Simone Roggen, Giulia Ajmone-Marsan, three members of the Argovia Philharmonic Orchestra, and Claire Huangci play a quartet in E major for clarinet, violin, cello and piano. It was written by the little-known Viennese composer Walter Rabl (1873–1940). The violinist Simone Roggen plays a Storioni violin from the Segelman Trust Collection. The video shows excerpts from the concert. It's a shame that you can't hear music like this live at the moment! (9th February 2021)
We look back on the extremely difficult year of 2020 with a reference to a recording of Dvorak's Romance for violin and orchestra in F minor, op. 11. The project is representative of many similar projects that were carried out because live concerts were not possible. Milan Al-Ashhab plays the solo part on an Amati violin from 1662, simply and movingly. He is accompanied by the orchestra L'armonia terrena under the direction of Zdenek Klauda. Among the many video offerings published last year, this beautiful recording has so far received little attention. A mere 297 views is actually far too few for such a delicate interpretation.
The Maggini Foundation team wishes all musicians and lovers of old string instruments a Happy New Year! (4th January 2021)
On 10 September, the Sinfonieorchester Basel, conducted by Ivor Bolton, played works by Brahms, Winkelman and Liebermann in the newly renovated Stadtcasino. The composer Helena Winkelman herself gave a very convincing performance as the soloist in the premiere of her double concerto for two violins. She was partnered by the famous violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja. Helena Winkelman played the Dumas violin, which for many decades was considered the most beautiful Maggini violin and has more recently been attributed to the Brescian G. B. Rogeri by various experts. Arte recorded the concert in full. Take a look – it's worth it! The Winkelman double concerto entitled ‘Gemini’ starts at 54:00. (18th September 2020)
In 2019, the Maggini Foundation was able to add a number of excellent instruments to its collection, including cellos by Bernardel ‘père’, Nicolas François Vuillaume and Peter Westermann, and violins by Marino Capicchioni, Giovanni Paolo Maggini and Claude Pirot. In October, she rented a violin from Jean Baptiste Vuillaume (made in Paris around 1860) from us, and just one month later she won her first audition with the new violin. It's not always the case, but this time the violinist and the violin were truly made for each other. We wish Ms Kopylova all the best and much success for the upcoming audition period in Basel. (6 February 2018)
Congratulations, Ülker Tümer! The Turkish cellist has won third prize at the Second Benyamin Sönmez Cello Competition. The student of Prof. Jean-Guihen Queyras can look back on a successful year, during which she also won the coveted Helmut Spehl Prize in Freiburg. Out now: the new CD by the Tonkünstler Orchestra in Vienna. The CD, entitled ‘Symphonic Poems’, includes three works by Richard Strauss. A beautiful element in the orchestra's sound is concertmaster Chiril Maximov's violin, a violin by Nicolo Amati, built in Cremona in 1645. The violin is part of the Segelman Collection and was procured for Mr Maximov by the Maggini Foundation.
In the spring of this year, 27-year-old Chiril Maximov was very lucky to be able to take up his position as concertmaster at the Tonkünstler Orchestra in Vienna immediately after graduating. He needed a good violin for the probationary period. He came to Langenthal to see us and decided to rent the 1645 Amati violin. With this violin, he got off to a successful start in his professional life. After three months, he was informed that he could now play a Sanctus Seraphin violin from the collection of the Austrian National Bank. The Amati violin is currently available again. Interested parties are requested to contact us by e-mail.
The new recording can also be listened to on Spotify and Idagio. (24 October 2017)
Congratulations, Eduard Kollert! The 14-year-old violinist from the Czech Republic has won a special prize at the 10th International Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians in Astana. He was awarded this prize for the best interpretation of a virtuoso piece. His interpretation of Franz Waxman's Carmen Fantasy convinced both the jury and the audience. Eduard played a violin by Jean Baptiste Vuillaume from the Segelman Trust collection at the competition. The Maggini Foundation provided him with the instrument. (28 June 2017)
The 17-year-old Swiss violinist Elea Nick will perform twice at the Tonhalle in Zurich in the coming weeks: On 3 June she will play the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto in E minor with the Südwestdeutsche Philharmonie Konstanz, and on 12 July she will perform the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto in D major for the second time in just eight months in Zurich's venerable concert hall, this time with the Ostrava Philharmonic Orchestra. This 1st prize is also a well-deserved success for the ‘Young Musicians on World Stages’ programme, which has been supporting Veriko Tchumburidze together with other Turkish musicians for several years. Between 2012 and 2016, Veriko played various instruments that the Maggini Foundation provided for her, and celebrated her first successes with them. Here you can see her interpretation of Shostakovich's Violin Concerto No. 1 in A minor. (24 October 2016)

Thanks to the support provided by the ‘Young Musicians on World Stages’ project, she has so far played a violin by J. B. Vuillaume (Paris ca. 1845), which was arranged for her by the Maggini Foundation. Now the Deutsche Stiftung Musikleben (German Foundation for Musical Life) is providing her with a violin by J. B. Guadagnini (1756), and she is passing the Vuillaume violin on to 16-year-old Doğa Altınok, another very talented scholarship holder in the ‘Young Musicians on World Stages’ project. We wish both young musicians continued success! (16 March 2016)
Rediscovering Viennese Classicism: Veriko Tchumburidze and Chiara Enderle have recorded concerts by the Wranitzky brothers, who are unknown today, with the Munich Chamber Orchestra under Howard Griffiths. The CD, made possible by the Swiss Orpheum Foundation, was released by Sony in January. The 19-year-old Georgian-Turkish virtuoso Veriko Tchumburidze plays the violin concerto by Anton Wranitzky (1761–1820) with a Vuillaume violin from the Maggini Foundation, thanks to support provided by the ‘Young Musicians on World Stages’ project. (9 February 2016)
An attractive violin for baroque musicians: we have just had a beautiful English violin from around 1760 gently restored to the baroque style. The violin has a modern neck and a new fingerboard. It has been refitted with a baroque bridge and tailpiece. This instrument, with its high arch and a noble, mellow sound, can be rented for 100 francs per month. You are invited to make an appointment with us by email or using the contact form. (3 November 2015)
At the Summer Academy in Salzburg, Erzhan Kulibaev was named best violinist. Heidemarie Klabacher wrote about his performance at the prizewinners‘ concert: “The violin section was represented by a – so to speak – ”seasoned’ prizewinner, Erzhan Kulibaev, who was born in Kazakhstan in 1986. He played Ernest Bloch, ‘Nigun’ from ‘Baal Shem’ and Jean Sibelius, the second piece from the Humoresques op. 87. But after his performance of the Tchaikovsky Concerto, one wondered whether it might not have been better suited to a soloist, given the precision and accuracy of Kulibaev's performance, especially after hearing Muti – rather than Mutter – perform it recently.» Erzhan Kulibaev plays a Vuillaume violin from the Segelman Trust collection. (2 September 2015)
To mark the 25th anniversary of German reunification, violinist Sven Stucke and pianist Johann Blanchard are presenting the project ‘The Sound of Unity’, a combination of concert and video installation. The presentation by the two first-class musicians can be seen and heard on 12 September 2015 in Sven Stucke's hometown of Magdeburg at the Monastery of Our Lady. Sven Stucke is, among other things, a scholarship holder of the Rhineland-Palatinate State Foundation Villa Musica and has been living in New York since 2013. He plays a particularly beautiful violin from the Maggini Foundation, which was probably built in Italy in the first half of the 18th century. (26 August 2015)
Carlos Johnson, who has been first concertmaster of the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Hanseatic City of Lübeck since 2000, will perform as a soloist on various occasions this autumn. On Sunday, 11 October 2015, for example, he will play Alban Berg's violin concerto with the Lüneburg Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Thomas Dorsch. On 20 and 21 December, he will demonstrate his virtuosity together with Stanislas Efaev in the ‘Gran Duo Concertante’ for double bass and violin. The Italian Giovanni Bottesini originally composed this technically demanding piece for two double basses in the 1840s; shortly after the premiere, one of the double bass parts was transcribed for violin by Camillo Sivori. The Hanseatic City Orchestra will accompany the two soloists under the direction of Andreas Wolf. Carlos Johnson will play a violin by Ferdinand Gagliano, made in Naples in 1785. The violin is part of the English Segelman Trust collection, which is managed by the Maggini Foundation. (17 August 2015)

We wish Weronika continued good luck and all the best. (8 July 2015)
